Bridgerton in Culpeper: Because Who Doesn’t Want to Feel Fancy?

As we near 2026, Culpeper joins communities across Virginia in a momentous occasion: the commemoration of 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This year marks a high point in the decade-long journey leading up to America’s Semiquincentennial, a chance not only to remember the birth of our nation, but also to reflect on the enduring values of freedom, community, and civic spirit.
In 2025, Culpeper proudly celebrated the 250th anniversary of the Culpeper Minutemen, one of the most legendary militia groups of the Revolutionary era. Known for their bravery, independence, and fierce defense of liberty, the Culpeper Minutemen symbolize the spirit that defined our community at the dawn of America’s fight for independence. Their commemoration drew residents and visitors together in a powerful reminder that Culpeper’s story is deeply entwined with the nation’s founding.
To further honor this milestone, Culpeper Tourism partnered with local artist, Layton Scarborough, to create a striking mural commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Culpeper Minutemen. The artwork not only captures the courage and determination of these early patriots but also serves as a lasting public tribute, inspiring residents and visitors alike as they walk through downtown.
That anniversary celebration and the mural that now anchors it in our landscape set the stage for an even broader recognition in 2026, as we honor both Culpeper’s contributions and Virginia’s central role in the nation’s independence.
The VA250 initiative is Virginia’s statewide effort to honor the Commonwealth’s essential role in the founding of the United States. As the birthplace of presidents, ideas, and movements that shaped the republic, Virginia stands at the heart of the nation’s story.
For Culpeper County, this anniversary is about more than looking back, it is about recognizing the values of resilience, service, and pride that have guided our community for centuries. Culpeper 250 is our opportunity to celebrate where we have been, honor those who came before, and look to the future we are building together.
In 1775, Virginia organized its 62 counties into 16 Military Districts, each charged with raising a regular company and a large minute battalion. The Culpeper District, made up of Fauquier, Culpeper, and Orange counties, stood out by being the first to complete its regular company and the only district to fully raise a minute battalion.
That October, more than 650 recruits mustered at “Clayton’s Old Field” (now Yowell Meadow Park) before deploying in response to Patrick Henry’s call for immediate mobilization. This proved to be the largest deployment site in Virginia during the 1775–76 campaign.
Revolutionary War historian Dr. Patrick Hannum noted, “The Culpeper Battalion was a major contributor… standing above other military districts in the impact they had on the campaign of 1775 and early 1776. The Culpeper men were most ready when Virginia was least ready to go to war with a competent foe.”
Known for their green hunting shirts and rattlesnake flag, the Culpeper men fought at the Battle of Great Bridge, where their courage helped secure Virginia’s early liberation.
Throughout the year, Culpeper will host events that bring history to life while also showcasing the best of our modern community. Residents and visitors can look forward to, living history programs and reenactments, community festivals and parades, local celebrations that highlight Culpeper’s culture, businesses, and civic pride, and educational programs and exhibits. Statewide VA250 events will also take place and you can learn more at about them at https://va250.org/.
Virginia’s story is America’s story. No other state contributed more leaders to the nation’s founding than Virginia. From Patrick Henry’s fiery cry of “Give me liberty, or give me death!” to Thomas Jefferson’s authorship of the Declaration of Independence, Virginia voices shaped the principles that defined a new nation.
Virginia was also home to George Washington, Commander of the Continental Army and the first President of the United States; James Madison, the “Father of the Constitution;” and James Monroe, whose Monroe Doctrine influenced American policy for generations. Together with countless patriots, soldiers, and everyday citizens, Virginians played a defining role in securing independence and shaping democracy.
The VA250 Commission seeks to remind us of these contributions while also inviting every community, from large cities to small towns like Culpeper, to reflect on how the ideals of liberty and self-government continue to guide us today. This commemoration is more than a look back; it is a call to civic engagement. By participating, communities like Culpeper are affirming that the spirit of 1776 still has meaning: freedom is not just inherited, it must be nurtured, celebrated, and renewed by every generation.
As 2026 unfolds, we invite everyone to join in the Culpeper 250 and VA250 events. Whether you are attending a reenactment, volunteering at a festival, or simply taking time to reflect on what independence means to you, your participation is part of this living history. Together, we honor our past while moving forward stronger, prouder, and more united than ever. For event details, schedules, and ways to get involved locally, visit www.culpeperva250.com.
